Some of the teens were orphans. Many had special needs. A few had aged out of foster care before they were ready. Each young man needed a little something extra to get his life moving in the right direction.
Dr. Lauren McFadden and her physical therapist husband, Bryan, define the challenging world of physical medicine. But with employee cutbacks and discontinued services, Saint Michael's Rehabilitation Center is program the McFaddens have worked so hard to build. Not willing to sacrifice the quality of their work or their integrity, Bryan and Lauren leave prestigious jobs and embark on a mission that begins with construction of a new home. Their goal is to keep at least a few seriously injured homeless teens from being placed in nursing homes. Word quickly spreads across state lines of the new housing facility available to orphaned kids with disabilities. As expected, it doesn't take long for the estate bedrooms to fill and the amount of work to get out of hand. To manage the chores, two misguided medical students are hired to work at the McFadden Estate; but solutions don't always fall into place as planned. More new residents begin to arrive, including young adult victims that have been tossed out on the streets because they've aged out of the family services program. ********** With each successive book, the reader gains insight into many sensitive issues often faced by today's teenagers and young adults, especially those youth living with severe disabilities. Particular attention is given to social interaction, emotional conflicts, family values, school and employment, personal empowerment, building self-esteem, sexual encounters, and intimate relationships. Don't look for heroes in these books. Be warned that some endings aren't always pleasant. There are no miracle medical cures introduced, and some relationships will crumble. Each young person comes into the story seeking refuge from homelessness, abandonment, abuse, domestic violence, and/or physical disability, just to list a few tragic examples. Each arrives with individual concerns that have to be addressed. All will learn to use everything within themselves to survive in a world not always willing to make compromises. Don't expect to be inspired or moved with pity. Do expect to be enlightened!
"We built this place with a special purpose in mind: to provide a home for abandoned teenagers that are disabled as well as young adults with special needs. And if you think for one minute that I am going to give up on you, you are very, very wrong." Bryan McFadden

Much of my research is obtained through medical reference books, professional advisors, physicians, therapists, pharmacists, technicians, educators, and educational materials. I grew up in a disability-influenced environment, and I've worked in the field of physical medicine. My greatest source of information, however, comes from friends that are willing to share their lives with me. I am deeply grateful for their generosity and their patience.
