Welcome to The Front Entrance Featuring The McFadden Novel Series, as well as nonfiction articles published online by author and freelance writer, Mary King. Prior to 1990, many public places of business – restaurants, department stores, theaters, government buildings, libraries, etc. – were not designed to be wheelchair accessible. Patrons on wheels could sometimes enter via a ramped loading dock in the rear of the building or perhaps a restaurant's kitchen entry at the rear. Once inside the building, however, double doorways, narrow walkways and inaccessible bathrooms presented major challenges. It was clear that something had to be done. Thus, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was born. Today, people who are mobility-challenged can enter public buildings just like everyone else. But that's not all; sidewalks with cut curbs make wheeling easier, electric entry doors require no effort to navigate and bathrooms offer at least one handicapped stall. This website was named "The Front Entrance" as a reminder of all the effort and hard work it took to create and pass the ADA. Incidentally, standards for accessible design were updated again in 2010. See the current accessibility revisions. |
